Removing Paint-Transfer Scratches Like a Pro: My 5000-Grit Wet Sanding Process

Have you ever walked up to your car and discovered a streak of someone else’s paint across your door?
Parking-lot mishaps and door dings are frustrating, but the good news is that not every mark requires a full repaint. Here’s how I recently tackled a stubborn paint-transfer scratch and brought a tired panel back to life.
---
Step 1 – Assessing the Damage
The first step is understanding what you’re looking at. Paint transfer often sits on top of the clear coat rather than deep inside it. That means with the right technique, you can carefully remove the foreign paint while preserving the factory finish.
---
Step 2 – 5000-Grit Wet Sanding
For this project, I chose 5000-grit sandpaper—an ultra-fine abrasive perfect for leveling minor imperfections.
Lubrication is key. I kept the panel generously misted with a detailing spray to prevent heat buildup and ensure a smooth glide.
Gentle, even strokes. Light pressure is all that’s needed to gradually remove the transfer without thinning the clear coat.
---
Step 3 – Polishing (Off-Camera)
After the sanding was complete, I polished the area to restore gloss and clarity. Unfortunately, I forgot to capture this step on video, but it’s a critical part of the process. Polishing removes the microscopic haze left by sanding and reveals a smooth, reflective surface.
---
Step 4 – The Reveal
The side-by-side before and after tells the whole story:
The paint transfer is gone.
The finish is smooth and even.
The original color and shine are fully restored.
---
Why Professional Technique Matters
Wet sanding is not a beginner job. Too much pressure or the wrong grit can cut through the clear coat and create costly repairs. That’s why trusting a professional detailer ensures the safest, cleanest result.
