If you've shopped around for a ceramic coating, you've probably heard some version of "drop it off Monday, pick it up Wednesday." For a lot of people, that means juggling rides, working around a missing daily driver, and waiting.
At TDS The Detail Shop, we do paint enhancement and ceramic coating right in your driveway, usually in about half a day. Here's what goes into that time, what you can expect from the results, and why the job doesn't have to take your car away for days.
Where the Time Goes
Shops have good reasons to schedule the way they do. They're managing multiple vehicles, multi-step correction jobs, and a lot of logistics. That's a real part of running a shop.
A mobile service works differently. When we pull into your driveway, there's one car on the schedule: yours. Every minute we're there goes to prep, polishing, and protecting your paint. That's why a single-step enhancement and a one-layer coating on a typical car takes about half a day. Larger vehicles, or paint that needs more attention, can take longer, and we'll tell you that up front.
What We Do, Step by Step
Decontamination Wash: We foam and wash to lift road film and old wax or sealant. Then we use an iron remover to dissolve embedded brake dust and a clay treatment to pull out bonded grit. A coating can only bond to paint that is truly clean, so this step matters.
Single-Step Paint Enhancement: With a dual-action polisher, we work panel by panel to reduce light swirls and haze and bring back gloss and clarity.
Panel Prep Wipe: We wipe every panel with a dedicated prep solvent to remove polishing oils. That leaves bare clear coat so the coating can bond properly.
Ceramic Coating Application: We apply Gyeon Q² Mohs EVO, a modern coating that provides up to three years of hydrophobic protection with a single layer, or up to four years with two. We apply it section by section and level it carefully, with a final inspection before we pack
up.
What an Enhancement Will and Won't Do
We want you to be thrilled with the result, and that starts with clear expectations.
What it removes: A single-step paint enhancement typically removes about 30–50% of light swirl marks, along with haze and dullness. The result is a big, visible jump in gloss and clarity.
What it won't remove: Deeper scratches, rock chips, and heavier swirls will still be there afterward. Results depend on your paint's condition and hardness, so some cars land at the higher end of that range and some at the lower end.
If your goal is paint that's as close to flawless as possible, you want multi-step correction. That's a longer service, and we're happy to quote it separately.
Before we start, we'll walk around the car with you, point out what will improve and what won't, and agree on the goal together.
Coating in Your Driveway: How We Handle the Weather
Modern coatings like Gyeon Q² Mohs EVO are designed to be applied outdoors, but conditions matter. The coating should never go on in direct sunlight, and it needs to stay dry during initial bonding.
We work inside your garage, under cover, or position the vehicle in natural shade to keep panel temperatures controlled. We also watch the forecast closely and will reschedule if rain, heavy pollen, or unstable weather could put the finish at risk.
After the job, we'll give you simple aftercare instructions: keep the car dry for the first 12-24 hours, and refrain from washing the vehicle with soaps or chemicals for 14 days while the coating reaches full cure.
